# Sub-Zero Water Filters: How Often to Change Them

> Change a Sub-Zero refrigerator water filter every 12 months or after 750 gallons, whichever comes first, and sooner if the flow slows or the cubes turn hollow.

Topic: maintenance. Published 2026-10-10.

On a Sub-Zero built-in, the water filter is rated for up to 750 gallons or twelve months, and whichever comes first is your deadline. In practice that means once a year, on the day the control panel asks for it. Replace it earlier if the dispenser stream turns weak, the ice picks up a stale taste, or the cubes start coming out hollow, because each of those says the cartridge has clogged ahead of schedule.

## Why the calendar usually wins

Seven hundred fifty gallons spread over a year works out to about two gallons a day, every day, between the dispenser and the ice maker. Most kitchens never pull that much, so the twelve-month mark arrives first. The gallon limit matters mainly in a busy house that fills bottles and coolers from the door.

Age counts even when the cartridge has seen light use. Carbon that has sat wet for a year is past its best, and the housing is dark and damp. The filter was tested by NSF International against NSF/ANSI 42 for taste and odor and NSF/ANSI 53 for health-related contaminants, and those results only hold inside its rated life.

One local note: much of the tap water around Mandarin comes from the Floridan aquifer and is on the hard side. A refrigerator filter is not a softener. It cleans up taste and sediment, but the minerals that leave white crust on a dispenser pass straight through.

## What the control panel is telling you

On Classic (CL) and Designer (DET, DEC) models with touch controls, Snooze/Refresh appears when the water filter is due. The same prompt also covers the air purification cartridge, so check which one it is asking about. Snooze pushes the reminder back 24 hours and resets nothing.

Older Classic (BI) units have a white reset button just left of the filter. If you run one without a cartridge, either with the bypass plug 7011209 or with the twist-in filter simply taken out, press that button five times within seven seconds and the filter life monitor switches off.

## Which cartridge fits

The twist-in filter 4204490 is the common one, and 9030868 is interchangeable with it. It fits Classic (BI, CL) and Designer (DEC, DET) refrigerators plus the 648PRO, PRO3650 and PRO4850. Some older BI units take a two-prong push-in cartridge instead. If yours used the microbiological 7023811, that part is discontinued; 7045454 takes its place, but it is rated for color, taste and odor only.

Some Sub-Zero units have no internal filter at all. Most wine storage lacks one (the IW-30CI is the exception), as do the UC-24 and DEU undercounter models and the ID drawers, and the DEU1550I ice maker ships without one.

## Swapping it, and the first ice afterward

On a Classic (CL), lift the grille from its bottom edge. Give the old cartridge a quarter turn counterclockwise and pull it out, with a towel below for the drip. Remove the plastic cap from the new one, push it in, turn it clockwise until it stops, and follow the prompts on the panel.

New carbon sheds fine dust and holds trapped air. On CL, DET and DEC models without a dispenser, throw away the first two full bins of ice. On dispenser models, run water for two minutes before drinking any. The UC-15I needs only its first batch discarded.

## When a new filter does not fix it

| What you notice | Probable reason | Try this first | Book a visit if |
|---|---|---|---|
| Weak dispenser stream | Clogged or wrong cartridge | Fit the correct new filter | Still weak with a fresh one |
| Hollow or small cubes | Short fill | New filter, then wait a day | Still hollow after a day |
| Drip under the grille | Cartridge not seated | Remove it and reseat it | Leak continues once seated |

If the flow stays poor with a fresh cartridge, the restriction is upstream or in the fill valve itself. The [hollow cubes note](/porch-notes/hollow-ice-cubes/) explains why a short fill shows up in the ice first. Replacing an ice maker water valve or supply line typically falls in the $250–$650 range, with the firm figure given after the $80 diagnostic. The [ice maker repair page](/repairs/ice-maker/) covers what that visit looks at.

## What it costs

Parts and labour for the repairs this page is about, plus the diagnostic that comes first.

| What is being put right | Parts and labour |
| --- | --- |
| Diagnostic visit | $80 flat, credited toward the repair |
| Ice maker, water valve or supply line | $250–$650, parts and labour after the diagnostic |

Every line is a range because the firm figure is written down after the diagnosis and not before it. The $80 covers coming out, testing the system and telling you what is wrong, and it comes off the repair the moment you say go ahead. The lowest figure published on this site is $80 and the highest is $2,290: quote a band, never a single number.
