# Sub-Zero built-in refrigerator repair

## A built-in is two refrigerators in one cabinet

Most household refrigerators run a single compressor and push some of the
freezer's cold air across to the fresh-food side through a damper. A Sub-Zero
built-in generally does not work that way. It carries two separate sealed
systems — its own compressor, its own evaporator and its own refrigerant
circuit for each compartment — which is why the freezer can stay bone dry while
the produce drawers stay humid, and why the two sides can behave completely
differently when something goes wrong.

That single fact is the most useful thing a homeowner can know about the
appliance, because it tells you how to read the symptom before anyone arrives.
If one compartment is warm and the other is perfectly cold, the fault almost
certainly lives inside that one system. If both sides drift up together, the
cause is usually upstream of both: air across the condenser, the control that
tells both systems what to do, or the power arriving at the unit.

## The faults that come up most often

**One side warm, one side fine.** In order of how often we find it: an
evaporator fan that has stopped turning or slowed down, a defrost cycle that is
no longer clearing the coil, a temperature sensor reading wrong, and last of
all a genuine loss of refrigerant charge. The first three are ordinary parts
work. The fourth is sealed-system work and requires recovering the refrigerant,
which is why it costs more and takes longer.

**Frost across the back wall of the freezer.** Ice on the rear panel is not the
freezer being too cold. It is moisture that got in and then failed to be
cleared, and the usual causes are a defrost fault or a door that is no longer
sealing. If you can see frost forming in a distinct pattern, note where it is
thickest before you call — it narrows the diagnosis considerably.

**Runs and runs, never settles.** The condenser on a built-in sits at the top
of the cabinet behind the upper grille, not underneath at the floor. It pulls
room air through that slot, and when the fins pack up the unit compensates by
running longer to shed the same heat. It will hold temperature for a long time
while doing it, so the first sign is usually noise or a warm kitchen rather
than warm food.

**Water under the crisper drawers.** Almost always a drain line that has
blocked, usually with the sticky residue that comes off produce over the years.
It is a small job and it is worth doing early, because standing water eventually
finds its way to the floor of the cabinet and then to the cabinetry around it.

**A new noise.** Built-ins are quiet, so a new noise stands out. Describe it on
the phone if you can — a rattle that comes and goes, a hum that has grown, a
click, a rhythmic tick. Each one points somewhere different.

## Why the condenser matters especially in Mandarin

Mandarin is a shaded place. The subdivisions here were laid out through the
1970s, 1980s and 1990s on generous lots and the tree cover was largely left
standing, which is pleasant to live under and hard on a condenser. Oak pollen
in spring, leaf litter through the year, and household dust all end up drawn
into the same slot above the doors. Add a dog or a cat and the fins can close
up in a couple of seasons.

Pulling the grille and clearing the condenser is the one piece of maintenance
that reliably extends the life of the compressor, and it is not difficult. It
is also the first thing we check on any complaint of a cabinet that runs
without stopping.

## What a visit involves

A flat $129 covers coming out, testing the system and telling you plainly what
is wrong; it comes off the bill if you go ahead with the repair. You get a
written estimate before any part is ordered. Sealed-system work is done under
EPA Section 608 certification, which is a federal requirement for anyone
recovering or charging refrigerant and is genuinely held here.
