Porch notes
Short pieces explaining what a symptom actually means, so that you can decide whether to call anyone at all.
These are written to be read by the person who owns the appliance, not by someone who repairs them for a living. Where a fault has a cheap explanation and an expensive one, both are named, and the cheap one is checked first.
Every note on the list is about something cold. Sub-Zero refrigeration is the whole of what this shop reads about and the whole of what it repairs — heating, air conditioning and ductwork are somebody else's trade and are not serviced here, however often a search engine decides otherwise.
New notes appear here as they are written. There is an RSS feed if you would rather not come back and look.
What it costs
What does the repair behind a note cost?
The whole table, because these notes range across the whole appliance. Each note narrows it to the bands that fit its own subject.
| What is being put right | Parts and labour |
|---|---|
| Diagnostic visit | $80 flat, credited toward the repair |
| Door gasket or seal replacement | $240–$620 parts and labour, after the diagnostic |
| Evaporator or condenser fan motor | $250–$550 parts and labour, after the diagnostic |
| Defrost heater, thermostat or sensor | $250–$640 parts and labour, after the diagnostic |
| Ice maker, water valve or supply line | $250–$650 parts and labour, after the diagnostic |
| Electronic control board | $440–$820 parts and labour, after the diagnostic |
| Compressor or sealed-system repair | $940–$2,290 parts and labour, after the diagnostic |
Every line above is a range because the firm figure is written down after the diagnosis and not before it. The $80 covers coming out, testing the system and telling you what is wrong, and it comes off the repair the moment you say go ahead. The whole table, and what happens when a repair is not worth doing, is on the what it costs page.
Sub-Zero Water Filters: How Often to Change Them
Once a year or 750 gallons is the rule, but a weak stream or hollow cubes can call for a new cartridge early. Here is how to read the signs and swap it.
Refrigerator Noise Troubleshooting: Which Sub-Zero Sounds Are Normal and Which Are Not
Most hums, clicks and gurgles are a working Sub-Zero. Grinding fans, a buzzing valve with no ice or a compressor that never rests are not. Here is how to sort them.
Why Ice Cubes Come Out Hollow
A hollow cube is a water problem wearing a temperature problem's clothes. Here is how to tell the two apart before you call anyone.
Frost on the Back Wall of the Freezer
Frost is not the freezer being too cold. It is humidity that entered the cabinet and then failed to be removed on the next defrost.
Condensation Along the Door Line
A seal fails slowly and invisibly. Long before it lets go, it is letting in humid air, and the cabinet is paying for it in compressor hours.
The Condenser Is Above the Doors, Not Below
The one piece of maintenance that reliably extends the life of a compressor, and the first thing we check on any cabinet that never stops running.
After the Power Blinks, and What to Check
A dark panel does not always mean a dead board. The useful first question is whether the compartment is still holding temperature.
Questions we are asked
What readers ask about these notes
- Who are these notes written for?
- The person who owns the appliance, not the person who repairs them for a living. Where a fault has a cheap explanation and an expensive one, both are named and the cheap one is checked first, because that is the order the work is actually done in.
- Can a note save me a service call?
- Sometimes, and that is deliberate. A packed condenser, a door that is not landing squarely and a water line that has been kinked are all things an owner can find without tools. When the answer is not one of those, the note at least tells you what you are looking at.
- What does it cost once a note runs out of road?
- One flat fee to come out, test the system and tell you what is wrong. It is credited toward the repair if you go ahead with the work. The bands above are what the repair itself falls into once the readings are in, and the firm figure is written down before a part is ordered.

He spent a long while on the readings before saying anything, which I appreciated. It was a failed compressor, and he laid out the case for and against repairing a cabinet this age without pushing either way.

We keep a lot of bottles and I wanted somebody who understood why two degrees matter. He did. He took the humidity as seriously as the temperature and never treated it as just a refrigerator.

He worked down the cheaper list first and said he hoped not to reach the refrigerant at all. He did reach it in the end, but I could see everything else had been ruled out before he said so.
